Using both variants. The last animals tiles I placed, I got paid 1 peso for each animal in the chain, not number of animals multiplied by the number of land tiles.

I think you're misunderstanding variant 1. You multiply the size of the animal chain by the number of land tiles directly adjacent to that chain. That is, it doesn't matter how big the land chain is -- only how land tiles are next to at least one animal from the herd.

Given the number of times this question gets raised, I wonder if it's worth changing the rules page, so that this is highlighted or explained better ?

I must admit, I'm playing in my first two Hacienda games right now, and I'm learning the payout rules on the go. The rules as written are confusing as hell.

Its very simple, take the number of animals multiplied by the possibility of genetic mutations divide by a predator vs prey ratio add in attachment to water (depending if there is flooding or drought) subtract for days of week that you owned a mongoose who ate too many mushrooms then take the logarithm of this figure, once you have that completed you almost there...
