Vape juices are one of the key elements of the vaping process and it’s their flexibility and diversity which ahs drawn many ex-smokers to vaping. With a wide range of VG and PG ratios, nicotine concentrations and flavourings, every flavour vape juice can be as unique as you want it to be, making vaping the perfect smoking alternative if you want a more varied nicotine experience. What’s more, the five ingredients of vape juice are far simpler and more trustworthy than the hundreds of chemicals you find in tobacco. Despite the wide range of mixtures of vape juice, the ingredients are always the same, just in differing amounts. Below is everything you need to know about the ingredients of all vape juices and the roles that they play.

Nicotine

This is the linking factor between e liquid and tobacco. The use of nicotine is used as the smoking cessation tool in vape juice and gives smokers a less unhealthy way to satisfy their cravings. Nicotine is an addictive substance which can be extracted from plants which are part of the nightshade family, unique in that it acts as both a depressant and a stimulant. In small amounts, nicotine increases the heart rate whilst in larger quantities can slow it down.

Vape juice can come in a range of different nicotine concentrations, and you’ll find that all users have their own specific tolerances. It’s crucial that you find the right concentration in yours to satisfy and not exceed what you need. You’ll find that there are many organic vape juices being sold that use short fills. These are vape juices which come nicotine free but with 20% of space left empty in the bottle for you to add your own nicotine content.

Water

Water is the basis for the “vapour” of e liquid. When the vape juice is heated up by the battery, it is the presence of water that allows it to heat up and vaporise. This clean “heat not burn” inhalation process means that there are far less chemicals in vapour than tobacco smoke, in part thanks to the use of water.

Flavourings

The flavourings in vape liquids vary from juice to juice. With so many flavours out there, they are usually based on natural flavourings and extracts of the original products. Most vape liquid flavourings are completely organic and vegan, meaning that there are very few vape liquids which can’t be used by those with dietary requirements or restrictions.

Propylene glycol

Propylene glycol is one of the main organic compounds in vape juice. The PG ratio in a vape juice is responsible for carrying the nicotine and flavourings in the e liquid.

Vegetable glycerine

The second organic compound in vape juice, this chemical is completely natural and harmless to the body. VG e liquid focuses on the thickness of the vape juice, working with the thinner flavour carrying propylene glycol to bring thicker vape clouds to your e liquid.

PG and VG are the two main compounds in vape juice. The other three ingredients are added to these organic compounds to create the vape juices we love so much. One thing which might strike those new to vaping as confusing, is the many different balances of these two compounds. With each bringing something unique to the table, we thought we’d explore the different mixes you’ll need for various vaping needs and wants.

But firstly, let’s have a closer look at the two compounds at the heart of vape juice and what their strengths are.

Propylene glycol

Propylene glycol is the organic compound in vape juice which relates to the taste and the nicotine content. This thinner compound carries the flavourings and nicotine in a vape juice, but is less heavy on vapour. The use of propylene glycol means you can add more flavour and nicotine to the vape juice, but it will come out harsher on the throat when inhaling.

Vegetable glycerine

Vegetable glycerine is a thicker compound than propylene glycol. The main aim of VG in vape juice is to provide the thick plumes of vapour you see emanating from the higher powered vape devices. The more VG in an e liquid, the thicker it will be. This means you will have less chance of your device flooding, but more chance of congealed e liquid cooking on your coil and causing spitback.

Best ratio for high nicotine concentrations

For those who are new to vaping and are looking for a sensation much like tobacco smoking, then a high PG juice will be the right starting point for you. High PG juices are common in cigalike devices and pod mods, where the aim of the game is not for cloud chasing, but for discreet and satisfying nicotine hits. For this style of vaping, look for 70 PG 30 VG juices.

Best ratio for cloud chasing

Any juice above 70 VG will most likely bring you a thicker cloud of vapour. This is because of the thickness of vegetable glycerine, bringing with its lessened taste a little more substance in the mouth. This is the popular vape juice balance for those who want low nicotine contents but large vape clouds, making it perfect for chain vaping and vape tricks.

Best ratio for taste

For taste, higher PG juices usually win, but to balance out the overwhelming nicotine hit, you can find plenty of midway balances which will stop you coughing so much! With so many vape juices out there with variable PG to VG ratios, a 50 / 50 compromise might be in order for taste and texture.

Which compound is healthier to vape with?

It’s fair to say that higher PG juices are often hotter and more intense. This can mean more work for your throat and more nicotine. If you have a high nicotine, high VG juice however, you might end up vaping more than your nicotine tolerance can handle, and end up feeling sick.

The best way to find your perfect balance is to test different balances out, either with pre filled vape juices or when mixing your own.
