just a quick update on this one, StanislavTikal has played well since my last post and could take the final game, in the meantime I should adjust the table becuase I got it slightly wrong... almondralf is now safe but faticus & kanga are both tied on 2, 2 & 2 so should Stan win, only one of faticus or kanga would be in the semi.

so we'll have to wait for this game to finish

ok, stage 1 finally finished and Stanislav was very unlucky not to make it.....

it means that both Kanga & Faticus are into the semies...

will post the draw later but in the meantime is there anyone who doesnt fancy playing in the plate (there are 10 -who finished 10th-19th and ideally we should do a plate semi with 9)?

I think there's a name collision with the round 1 games?

Maybe add 'r2' before the number?

right, no voluteers to dip out of the plate comp so i decided to take the top 9 players of the 10 remaining...

with Yakheh & Dawnuk winning their last games, that left only two without a win so i have to drop either scoot or jeffersdn... rather annoyingly both finished with 2 second's and 4 3'rd and didnt play against each other...

so I'm going to rather contravercially have to do a coin toss, which I'll do when I get home later this eve, following which I'll do the draw

Sry, seems completely unfair but had no way of deciding the 9th player... sadly jeffersdn lost out (if it happens again, I'll prioritise you)

Here's a poll for the crowd about table talk.

Given the following situation in a 3 player game (type 2), is the resulting in-game question fair?

Player 1 (p1) has created a massive land chain of 20+ tiles by mid-game. However, it's been at the expense of market capture. p1 has roughly 6 of 13 markets while p2 and p3 have about 10 of 13. Neither p2 nor p3 have large land chains.

Although p1 is currently 50 points behind, Doing the math, p2 realizes that p1 will inevitably dominate if further market access in unchecked. In a single turn p2 blocks p1 from 2 more markets, but cannot cheaply block any more.

p2 is in a tough spot because p1 will win unless blocked further; however, p3 will win if p2 sacrifices further resources to block p1.

p2 realizes that his only chance for victory is if p3 invests some resources to block p1 (at least as much as p2 has already spent).

Finally the question: is it fair for p2 to publicly suggest that p3 block p1?

I was p2 in this case, and I did publicly suggest p3 block p1.

If you're curious, p3 chose not to block p1 at all (even though there was at least one low cost means of doing this!) and p1 did indeed win (p2 came in second). By not choosing to block at all, p3 went from competing for 1st to competing for 2nd.

If this situation would happen during a real life board game of hacienda i would definitely suggest this verbally.
Imo some talk and manipulation is part of the game (especially for games like settlers of catan, but this can be the case with hacienda as well).

almost a time to update the tournament...

I think there's just one match out of 12 left, at the moment I think there are 4 people on two wins each

Myself, IBX, almondralf & lindalait

i think andyp, faticus, kanga have all won a game and the last game is between kanga & brennus... so looks like the final will be decided on second places etc

p.s. just a note back to faticus that sometimes the third place person can often decide the winner of a game but like playing pool, people generally dont like to be told what to do so even though blocking maybe the right move from your perspective, some people dont like blocking as a slighty agressive tactic, especially if it's not relevant to them, so best to put yourself in the situation where you're the one others need to block, i wouldnt expect any tactical discussing in the finals since people should be making there own minds up by then.

Even though in most face to face games I play there's a degree of table talk, it's generally not done in web games that I've played. I can't exactly pinpoint the reason but it just feels wrong. I can't remember the last game where someone has made comments like you were suggesting here on SBW.

True, i haven't done this in any hacienda web game i have played. For the same reasons as Kanga, not sure why but feels off. But like i said, i probably would hint strongly at things like this in face to face games.

So in conclusion i don't do it here, but would not mind if someone else does. I would mind if this was being done in private chat.

That game is finished now. I won, not sure if that helps or not.

thanks brennus,

yes, that makes things a bit easier since i would have had a three way tie-breaker otherwise, hard luck to kanga and also unfortunately to Lindalait,

It will be Myself, Almondralf & IBX in the final,

I recomend that we each pick one of the six maps used in this tournament

844
847
852
854
858
861

and pick your choise of variant, password - final

good luck, i will post the official results later when I get a chance and also review the plate tourament too.

p.s. apologies about being a bit slow setting up the nex tournament, it's on my radar and will happen soon
