Identity fraud is an act of pretending to be someone else, using another person's name, voice, ID, or any other identifying information to commit a crime, or to fool or defraud another individual or a third individual. In many cases, an individual may not even be aware that he or she has been a victim of identity theft until some type of adverse financial result occurs. Identity theft can occur in many different forms, and though there are several ways in which an individual can be a victim of this criminal activity, the most common types are described below. False Identification - This is one of the most common forms of this particular type of crime, in which criminals use another individual's picture, ID, voice, or any other identifying information in order to try to illegally gain access to bank accounts, loans, or any other type of financial accounts that are meant for or are restricted to the use of a particular individual. Often, fake identity thieves can use an already existing social security number or birth date, which means that the victims of this crime may not even be aware that they have been a victim of ID theft until some type of financial institution does not process credit for a bill. Fake ID thieves can then use the stolen identifying information to apply for a bank account, obtain a credit card, or work in any other way that would require a valid social security or birth date. This crime is often committed by criminals who pose as legitimate employees of financial institutions, or by those who have a close affiliation with banks or other licensed businesses. Identity Cloning - The creation of fake identities is also considered to be a form of ID theft, and involves the use of another individual's social security number, birth date, or any other identifying information in order to create a new identity, which they will use to commit crimes. This type of crime is one of the most dangerous because it often requires no physical action on the victim's part. The victim may simply be able to prove that the person committing the fraud lived at a specific address, but if that person used a social security number that matches an existing ID, the crime could still go unsolved. Another reason that using fake social security numbers is so dangerous is that by falsely registering as someone else, the criminals can cause a lot of damage to a business or someone's credit. False ID reporting can affect your credit rating, which can make borrowing much more expensive and limit your ability to get a job.
