The pathetic thing is, I had a note to myself on the notepad reading:

It takes up the top inch and a half of the screen. And still, I stole.

| How about, instead of the very strong penalty above, you make it a 6 point penalty every time you steal. Enough that it would never be beneficial to steal but still leaves you incentive to finish the game as well as you can. |

I take the point, but I am not sure 6 is enough. I have won games by more than 6 in the past and an unexpected steal could just be worth it for 6. (That could be a different variant though)
One reason for making the penalty so draconian was that a steal can have a disproportionate effect on the other players, hurting one much more than the other, so I really wanted to avoid it altogether.
Hopefully embarassment and good sportsmanship will mean those who have already stolen will play as fairly as they can. I also hope there will not be any more lapses! |

I'm quite enjoying this variant. I think it might be even more fun in a 5 player game. In 3 player, so far, it hasn't seen any more camel killing than I would usually expect, but it has made the farming provinces more reliable.
In 5 player, it would become dangerous for camels...! |
