In my question "this" referred to the question I presented, not to some other question in this thread.

I was just wondering how we can prove that "No question is a stupid question". If we can make question that is actually stupid, then that statement is obviously false.

Since there's an unlimited number of questions in the world, we cannot go through all the questions and prove each of them not stupid. We should try to make a general proof that shows that it is actually impossible to formalize a stupid question.

Until someone does that, I always try to ask a stupid question to prove that statement false.

Oh dear ... philosophy ... never could understand philosophy!

If 'you' don't know something and want to know it, how can it be stupid to ask?

Some people might see 'you' as stupid for asking, but the 'question' cannot be stupid as it requests information that you want to know. Idea

I don't think that's stupid, but what if you already know the answer, like "What is my name?"

Or questions which answer the question by itself: "How old is this 12-year-old boy?"

Or questions which include a false assumption: "When did you become a polar bear?"

Are these questions stupid?

If asking "What is my name?", your really asking the implied question: "Do you know my name?" ie the information you are after is not your name (you already know that in most circumstances), but if the other person knows your name!

Ditto the 12 year old boy question, particularly if you asked that question of a younger child, then your really checking is the child able to extrat the information from the question to give the answer.

If you were asking someone wearing a polar bear costume when they became a polar bear, the question sounds quite reasonable (if a little suspect in syntax). If you were asking a polar bear that question, you had better be in a zoo asking it behind a screen or the question may not be stupid but your position would be, and the answer would probably be the polar bear asking you "When did you become lunch?". If you were delusional when asking the question then the question isn't stupid as it contains its own information regarding the fact that you aren't in your right mind.

Shall I go on, or stop clogging the board ... ?
