Is there a way I can change my username?
Back when I signed up I didn't know how addicted to gaming I would become (thanks Goo, Spud) so I didn't use my usual handle. Now that I have several local friends on the site it kills me that I can't use my standard username in games with them. I know I'm whining. Sorry. Could I change it?
Please.
I'll be your best friend.

I support Matt's request

I also know that something similar has been done when a new user had
a problem with opening an account on SBW

I also started on SBW with a different username (14 total games)

I started using stargate when I realized I would be playing more often

my other account is still active Cool
I did request that the accounts be combined -- they were not Surprised
I do not play games with that account Smile
I do use the account for that great democratic pastime of voter fraud ---
voting more than once in the forum polls Twisted Evil Twisted Evil

the request to change a username could be limited to users with
at least 98 completed games Smile

There's one problem with changing username. As you play games your opponents will learn your playing style, but if you keep changing your name, they don't know who they are playing against, which gives an unfair advantage to the player who changes his username.

For this reason, poker sites especially don't allow changing the username, as knowing your opponent's playing style is crucial in poker.

But since we don't play poker here on SBW and we don't play for money, I'm not totally against this.

changing your username could be a ONE TIME ONLY event
and the old name could be listed in the user profile

You're a fine American. Maybe your skills could come in handy if we ever get a vote on the North American Security and Prosperity Partnership! Oh, wait... that'll never happen...

In that save vein, it'd be nice to be able to keep your user name, but change your password. I used a longer cumbersome password when I joined, not having any idea I would be playing 10 times the number of games here that I play in the rest of my life (of course that was before Hacienda and Tikal came on board). A shorter password would be helpful.

OK, I'll bite Very Happy
Surely you can change your password on the Edit Profile screen?
I've never tried it, and I'm not going to now, but the function is there.

Yeah, you're right Fred. I don't know--I went looking for it once and couldn't find it--seems rather silly now. I wonder where I was looking? Embarassed

Perhaps the answer is to allow "nicknaming" wherein a player could change his nickname to anything but his username would aways stay the same. The player's profile would show the real username as well as a pop-up rollover--i.e., in Matt's case, "Big66 (mdfreeman7)"

At this point I don't want to open up the can of worms that is changing a username. Adding in a nickname would be possible, but a giant pain in the butt since it would require altering the code of every single game that is running or in production, so that takes it out of contention.

For now your option are to stick with the name you have, or start a new profile. Changing one name isn't that hard, but if we do it once we will get more and more requests, and it can become very time consuming.

Thanks for the support Bob. I'll hit 100 soon! Smile

Spud's nickname idea seems good, but I don't know the logistical problems that causes.
(Shhh...Spud, watch what you post, there are Canadians here too!)

Thanks for the reply RyanMC. I understand that granting one request leads to having to grant all requests. It didn't hurt to ask.

I'm stuck with what I got. I don't want to start a new profile and lose the "amazing" stats I've compiled...

Thanks,

(I think thats all I've got... Spud, Goo, and Cetesq prolly have more nicknames for me they only use when I'm not around)

I don't know about anymore nicknames for Big Matt (except for the obvious "Sugarlips.") However, there is such a thing as "Pulling a Freeman." This is when you're consistently gung-ho to attend some event or gathering then you call at the last minute to say "Yeah... no, I can't make it."

Goo was just telling me today that he had to pull a Freeman on you the other night when the baby was sick. Laughing How are all things made round?

Beating a horse I suppose but...there is an efreeman on this site. A regular player like me. Maybe to help avoid confusion by others I could change my mdfreeman7? Wink
I understand the difficulty in opening this can of worms, but if my my regular handle "Big" should show up someday I would smile. Very Happy
