I realize the enormous amount of time Shocked it takes for the administrators to maintain this site, but is it possible to see an implementation of stargate's (I believe) idea of not allowing any postings until you have completed or at least taken a few turns in a game. The frequency of annoying and perverted postings from non-members seems to be growing and perhaps this would dissuade the situation somewhat. Thanks for your consideration in advance Wink

I suggested a minimum number of completed games Twisted Evil

question --- how many REAL new players make posts to the forum
in thier first few games vs. the SPAM posts

I see that someone posted X-Rated pictures yesterday Sad Sad

I'm thinking that's probably what we'll have to do. I had been hesitant to do it because then a new player couldn't ask questions like: "How do I join a game?" without having first joined a game.

But those types of posts are rare, and certainly we could just post a FAQ to help with that. Stay tuned...

If you do make a FAQ, you could always insert a notification that you can't post until you join (or complete) a game because it's one of your anti-spam measures.

(Of course this just serves to give notice to any spammer that happens to read the FAQ, which isn't probably (m)any of them...)

Fortunately, it's usually pretty easy to see which of the new messages are spam since their topics rarely have anything to do with any of the games played here, or anything even remotely relevant to games/gaming/etc.

Unfortunately (maybe?), I'm starting to agree more and more with those people who say that spam will be the death of the internet and e-mail as we know it. Sad

on doom9 all new users must wait 5 weeks before posting. Sure that ticks off the masses but having spam posts is vastly eliminated for the most part. I say having one complete game is not a harsh requirement to post in the forum at all.

I don't even think you'd need a complete game. I think just joining a game and taking even one turn would be enough to solve the problem. At least that's where I'd start.

Agreed, but have the FAQ very prominent on the first (or every) page, and have it in place before the anti-spam measures.

Yeah, I think we'll sticky it in a prominent location. We're way overdue for a FAQ anyway.

Adding a few forum admins who can delete spam posts would also help, although not solve the problem. (Yes I'm volunteering to help in this way.)

I'm no expert on this, but I think that just a slight change in the url could be enough to throw off the bots, for example something like 'sbwposting.php' instead of 'posting.php'. I have never seen any spam on mabiweb forum, and the only reason I can think of is that my instance of phpbb has a non-standard url (because it's integrated in php-nuke).
But I don't really know how the spam-bots work, so I could be wrong.

Yes, but the badge itself is made out of spam. Sorry. Razz
