I lost a province but then recaptured it before the grain card came up, but I did not receive the grain and the program said it was because I had lost the province.

But if you recapture a province before the grain (or gold) card comes up, shouldn't you receive the grain/gold?

Is this a bug, or the way it is supposed to work?

This was in game 17993, Year 2 Spring.

That's the way it's supposed to work.

In real life, when you win a province you take the card for the province and put it in your hand.

So if you lost it, it would leave your action board and go to your opponent's hand. When you won it back you'd get it from your opponent's hand into your hand, and it wouldn't be on the board to do the action.

OK. Still seems odd to me that if you own the province at the time the grain/gold are supposed to be obtained that you lose out, but now that I know it will help me plan my moves accordingly.

In this case, I knew I might lose the province, but also knew that I could probably recapture before the 'harvest', so I planned it that way. In the future, I'll know better.

Thanks.

You might think of it as follows:

When you own the province throughout the season, your troops spend their time gathering the grain or gold from the peasants.

When you lose the province, in order to regain it, your troops spend their time battling the opponent's troops, and have no time to gather the grain or gold from the peasants.

Hmm, well that kind of makes sense - but it doesn't explain why you can't supply more armies to a re-captured province .. which would surely be a natural thing to do!!

So let me generalize:

Troops in province are focused on the activity their fearless leader directs for them in the upcoming season: grabbing Grain or Gold from the peasants, overseeing building construction, recruiting/conscripting into the army.

If invaded, and no troops survive the invasion to focus on the directed activity, hte new troops retaking the province do not have time to both retake and recruit, or retake and do any of the tasks initially assigned.

In addition, any orders to the troops that were in the province at the beginning of the season have likely been lost, as there are no survivors from the invasion.

Hope that helps...

Lotsa

Plus, it's a game with rules, not a simulation.

Indeed - but if we're going to go to the trouble of making an explanation, then it should really cover all the bases! Lotsa's explanation seems to work, so I'll go with that ..

How about another explanation?

In the actual board game you plan your actions by putting province cards face down on spaces for each of the ten actions. If another player captures one of your provinces he takes the card for it, even if it is currently face down on an unresolved action spot. If you recapture that province, you immediately get the card back, but you can't place it face down again on the action spot -- because the rules say you can't.

There may be a thematic explanation for it, or it may just be to eliminate the potential for confusion in case you lost TWO provinces from unresolved action spots and then you recaptured one. You (and the other players) would have to keep track of which one it came from.
