Nice avatar Docaction, are you morphing into a new startgate?
Anyway, I believe the tools available in this site (passworded games) should be tried first, before making such a fuss about an "ignore list". Yet I notice that since I joined this site, 10 months ago, the only feature request that was granted came from stargate: milksheikh implemented the modifications because stargate drove 20+ miles to have some face to face games (not practical in hagin's case).
My point: The "Features Request" in this forum's name should be taken lightly, as suggestions to be considered after those 3 new games are implemented. I know sometimes it's frustrating to feel ignored, but there's a large group of users that got used to the way this site works and have managed to find enjoyment here.
I haven't yet learnt all the games in this site, so for me the implementation of a new game has less priority than other changes, but no "ignore list" please.

I like the site as it is and the community as it is. As for this endless debate, there are ways of making it go away without bothering the admins....ignore it......there will always be disaffected people who want more control...at the end of the day, each individual will vote with their time commitment....if you like the site. stay and play...if you don't, then have a nice day! I don't know what the big deal is about choosing who you want to play with anyway. It's not like you're interacting with these people for the most part. No one talks or says anything or is cordial in most of the games I play in. You may as well be playing against the computer.

Just play the game and ignore the poor sports, just like you play the game and ignore the good sports.

Why passworded games don't do the trick? You set up a game and announce in the forum that whoever wants to play fast can get the password from you... what's wrong with that?

Because passwords are an opt-in system. Players have to go out of their way to not only get the passwords but, due to them being on a completely separate page, they have to go out of their way to even see them.

Yes. And if you or other players are so distressed over other players you don't want to play with, then take the few extra steps you need to avoid them. Everybody who doesn't give a damn will continue to play the way they want, and you and the other paragon players can be safe and secure in knowing that only solid fast players will ever be allowed in your games. Problem solved!

By the way, this:
Quote:
That's not a good enough reason. Fact is, if the coders have not enough time, they should bring people in. I gather from the donations page that this isn't a for-profit venture so that shouldn't be a big deal.

Besides, they currently seem to be concentrating 100% of what little time they have on Caylus, La Citta and Maharaja and how many months or years have they been "in development"? Not enough time is a completely separate issue to whether otherchanges (or other new games) are needed or just desired.

is completely astonishing. You get to play games here FOR FREE because the admins of this site have devoted their UNPAID efforts to developing them for YOU... but you seem to feel entitled to direct their efforts to the features YOU want instead of what either THEY want to do or what the community AS A WHOLE prefers.

The fact that it's taken so long for them to develop Caylus, La Citta and Maharaja for this site should be an indicator of how little time they have to devote to the site, and you should be down on your knees thanking them every day for the games that are here and that work so well, and for how responsive they are to bugs and problems, NOT chiding them for being slow to do what YOU want. (And how exactly does this being a non-profit site make it easy to get more people to volunteer their time and efforts?)

Get over yourself. There is a workable solution for your perceived problem, even though it may not be as convenient as you want it to be, so use it.

Entitlement culture? Oh please. This is a community driven site rather than a commercial venture. Just like the community who developed PHP. Do you think they just petered into non-existence when they ran out of time? No. A responsible community-driven endeavour either passes it along to someone who does have time or brings in some of the volunteers they'd be sure to get.

Now I don't know whether that is the case or not but since so many have posted here about them having limited time, let's assume it is. So what is their motivation now? What do we want as a community? Based on the responses here it seems that new games are pretty high on the list. From an outside point of view that looks to be glacially slow in happening. Fair enough. Everyone has a life outside SBW so why not bring in some more volunteers who have the time to donate and are willing to do so?

Part of administering any site such as this is not only doing bugfixes, creating games, etc. It's ensuring that theres someone around to not only maintain it but extend it and improve it. I for one think the admins have to date done created an outstanding site. If they and the community at large are willing to wait months or years for new games, then that's fair enough. It doesn't have to be that way however.

The problem with words like "community culture" is that there is no ownership. Everything is diffused. If you feel that there is something you wish to do as part of the community, then please do so. Otherwise, the rest of "the community" seems content. Still, if your goal is to get others to pitch in and help, then I think there may be merit in that. I am a non-technical person so I can do nothing but provide rhetoric, however, if your exhortations generate further support to build new games, then I am certainly in support of it. Smile The resources, as they are now, however, seem limited and so we might have to pick and choose what is worked on (or not - none of us actually seem to be the ones doing the work Laughing )

I honestly believe there is a lot of merit to both sides of this argument. Which makes developing a good solution that much more difficult -- doing it in a way that will please everyone involved.

I do also want to improve this site. It is my child, and I do want to see it improve and develop. There are dozens, possibly hundreds of good suggestions that have been made and I would like to implement all of them. And yes, taking on additional volunteer developers would help address that, but doing even that will take a significant amount of effort to manage. I know this from experience -- bringing Ryan and Myke onboard has resulted in the addition of two excellent games, and they really saved me in terms of stepping up and taking over much of the daily administration and bug fixing over the past year, but it did take a lot of time supporting them in getting acquainted with how everything works, and was also a big risk (fortunately neither of them have wiped out the database, at least not yet).

I'm closing this and a few other threads that have passed the point of meaningful discussion for the time being, so that (a) I can catch up and (b) folks can calm down a little bit. I do ask that you all keep civil and respectful in your posts, and please try to remember that you aren't always going to be able to convince those with opposing views that you are right.
