I had to abandon a game of Reef Encounter because the rules were too complicated and poorly written. It would be a shame to have to sign up again because of that. I entered the game in good faith. |

It's perhaps diplomatic to start a thread such as yours with 'in my humble opinion'. Catagoric statements that the rules are poorly written are likely to provoke a hostile response.
I am in the middle of my first game of Reef Encounter and yes it is complicated but I'm sticking with it and have picked up the rules and a few strategies as the game has progressed. That is invariably the way when you play a game for the first time. However to say the rules are too complicated and to an extent that you had to abandon the game is frankly lame.
The shame is that 3 other players started a game off in good faith and now you have aborted the game for them. At least have the good grace to play the game out even if you you aren't sure exactly whats what yet.
However this is only your third game since 2004. Now that is a shame. _________________ It's not the winning, it's utter annihilation of your opponant that matters.

For what it's worth, the rules are confusing, but it's nothing to do with SbW -- the rules in the box are difficult to follow, and I believe they are simply duplicated here. The advantage of the rules in the box is illustrations, which can help clarify some of the more arcane or convoluted rules.
I think Reef Encounter is the only SbW game that I had to play face to face before I could understand how to play here, but having played it once f2f, I was able to decipher the rules and play it here quite easily. |

If face 2 face is a problem, then there are re-written rules available on boardgamegeek. That's how I learned. |
