As the vapor industry continues to grow and product designs and technologies continue to evolve, manufacturers continue to seek the latest competitive edge — they need to draw more customers away from smoking and toward the reduced harm alternative of vaping. Every new advance in vapor hardware and e-liquid benefits new vapers and the businesses that supply them.

What Is Salt Nicotine?
One of the more recent advances in vaping products has been e-liquids based on “nicotine salts.” Of course, one of the big questions a new vaper has is, naturally, “What is nicotine salt?” Referred to variously as nicotine salt, nic salt, or salt nic, this variety of nicotine in e-liquid is produced when nicotine base is combined with an acid, or multiple acids. The result is called a “nicotine salt”.

However, “salt” as used in the term “nicotine salts” refers not to the mineral seasoning used on food but, rather, simply to the scientific word for any base combined with an acid. Something else you should know about nicotine salt -based e-liquid is that the kind of acid used to form the nicotine salt can have a dramatic effect on the quality of the final product.

Simply put, Nicotine Salt E-liquid is e-liquid which uses nicotine salt rather than freebase nicotine. The differences between the two types of nicotine used in e-liquid can be quite dramatic, so it is crucial to learn and understand these differences.

Freebase Nicotine
Freebase nicotine, on the other hand, is simply unaltered liquid nicotine mixed into the e-liquid. Freebase nicotine is also released by igniting a cigarette, chewing tobacco, or using a nicotine replacement product such as a nicotine patch or nicotine gum. Freebase nicotine is the type of nicotine most easily absorbed into the human bloodstream.

Freebase nicotine is lipid soluble; in practice, this means that it can cross into the brain, where it triggers the production of dopamine. This is why nicotine delivers a pleasurable feeling to the user.

Freebase nicotine has been the standard form of nicotine in cigarettes since the 1960s, when it was discovered by Philip Morris of Marlboro that pairing freebase nicotine with ammonia would result in a massive nicotine delivery to smokers. This is the combination of compounds that kept smokers so effectively hooked on smoking for so long.

When used in e-liquid, freebase nicotine is combined with Propylene Glycol (PG) and Vegetable Glycerin (VG), which are carrying agents. These two compounds deliver both the nicotine and flavor of the e-liquid to the user. Vegetable Glycerin is also chiefly what’s responsible for the visible vapor exhaled by the user. The higher the VG level, generally speaking, the more visible vapor is exhaled, producing the clouds some vapers take quite a lot of pleasure in. The higher the PG level, generally speaking, the more vivid the flavor is in the vapor.

Nicotine Salt vs Freebase E-liquid

Nicotine salt based e-liquid differs from freebase nicotine e-liquid in several important ways that are immediately noticeable to the user. It’s little known among smokers, but freebase nicotine is actually quite harsh; one of the effects of smoking is an anesthetic effect which diminishes the natural harshness of inhaled nicotine.

This is why freebase nicotine e-liquid can cause coughing fits in ex-smokers who switch to vaping; freebase nicotine e-liquids don’t have the same anesthetic compound to dull the new vaper’s system to the harshness of the nicotine.

Nicotine salt based e-liquid, however, is much smoother on the throat than freebase nicotine e-liquid, allowing the new vaper to more comfortably vape very high levels of nicotine.

In fact, while freebase nicotine e-liquid is most comfortable at nicotine strengths of between 3 and 12 milligrams per milliliter, nicotine salt based e-liquids are typically available in strengths between 30 and 50 milligrams per milliliter, delivering a nicotine hit more similar to that found in a combustible cigarette. This makes it possible for ex- smokers to more easily transition away from smoking and into vaping, which we’ll remind you is a much less harmful alternative.

How Does 50mg Nicotine Salt Compare To A Cigarette?
According to available sources, each cigarette contains roughly 1 gram of tobacco, or approximately 8mg of nicotine. Estimates actually vary from 8mg to 20mg, but we’re going with 8mg since on average smokers don’t tend to uptake much higher than that. How much of the nicotine a smoker will uptake from a single cigarette is heavily dependent on factors which can vary from smoker to smoker and even from cigarette to cigarette, such as how many inhalations the smoker engages in, how long each is, how deeply into the lungs the smoke is pulled, and the time between inhalations.

A vaper, on the other hand, inhales vapor in a drastically different way than a smoker inhales smoke. This is simply due to the inherent differences between a vape and a cigarette. A cigarette, once lit, is smoked, usually to completion. A vape, on the other hand, can be taken from the pocket, used, and put right back into the pocket. So while a smoker may indulge in roughly 20 hits of nicotine before the cigarette is gone, a vaper may take 20, or 30, or just one, causing the amount of nicotine delivered to be completely different.

However, for raw numbers: A cigarette contains approximately 8mg per gram of usable nicotine under average use, while a salt nic based vape can contain up to 50mg per milliliter.

Nicotine Salt Hardware

The best devices for using nicotine salt based e-liquids tend to be of the smaller and less robust variety. This is not only better for your wallet, as pod systems and all-in-one devices tend to be far less expensive than their bigger, more complex box mod counterparts, it’s also better for your health, frankly speaking. Devices such as the JUUL, Geek Vape Aegis Boost, and IPV V3-Mini are smaller, less complicated, less expensive alternatives to their larger counterparts. At the same time, they’re also less powerful, which means that these devices are best suited to the higher nicotine strength salt nicotine e-liquids make possible.

Can I Put Nicotine Salt E-liquid In An RDA?
While it’s certainly possible to use nicotine salt based e-liquid in a rebuildable dripping atomizer, we’d strongly advise against it. Rebuildable dripping atomizers are just the opposite of small pod systems when it comes to power, as they’re typically run on mechanical mods. Mechanical mods are unregulated, meaning that – depending on the build you install into your RDA, you’re going to get a lot of vapor. Even a freebase nicotine e-liquid of 12mg can be “too much of a good thing” when used in an RDA. A salt nicotine based vape delivered through an RDA would absolutely be too much.

Why Use Nic Salt Instead Of Freebase?
Nicotine salt e-liquids deliver more nicotine, more smoothly. The choice to use one could depend on a couple factors. First, it’s probably the easiest introduction into vaping a smoker could want, taming nicotine cravings with more greater comfort and fewer inhalations needed to achieve satisfaction. Even long time vapers might choose nicotine salt based e-liquids for use in the smaller, less complicated pod and all in one devices mentioned above, simply because while a large, powerful and complex box mod and sub ohm tank combination is great at home, such devices aren’t nearly as pocket friendly as their smaller cousins – and those smaller cousins work most effectively with salt nicotine e-liquids in them.

Using Nicotine Salt In A Sub Ohm Tank
As with the use of nicotine salt e-liquid in an RDA, it may not be the best idea. However, it’s a touch more practical in a sub-ohm tank than from an RDA, and here’s why: Sub-ohm tanks are almost exclusively used with full sized, full power box mods that have advanced functionality built into them – most importantly for this question, the function you want is variable power output. Sub-ohm tanks also typically have adjustable air flow.

Therefore, dialing down the power to the sub-ohm tank down to where you need it, while opening the airflow as wide as you need it, will allow you to adjust how hard a nicotine hit you’ll get from vaping salt nicotine e-liquid in the sub-ohm tank. You can only do half of that adjusting with an RDA.

Is Nicotine Salt Bad For You?
On balance, salt nicotine isn’t any worse for you than freebase nicotine is. That said, it’s possible – as noted above – to have too much of a good thing. If you find that vaping causes a headache or a queasy stomach, consider taking the nicotine strength of your e-liquid down to the next lower level. Nicotine salt e-liquids tend to come in either 30mg or 50mg strengths. If you find that even 30mg has become too strong for you to vape comfortably, it may be time to switch from nicotine salt e-liquid to freebase nicotine e-liquid, which is still the default type for most vapers.

My first vape experience was connected exactly with nicotine salts, I refused from harmful smoking habit this way. For today, I prefer wax concentrates and wax pen vaporizer Yocan Evolve Plus .

Nicotine is nicotine, no matter how you look at it. But sometimes I really want to, it's perfect for calming the nerves.
