The European Commission has awarded the Swedish city of Vaxjo the official title of the greenest city in Europe. This decision was made by the EC based on the results of an open tender. More information here.
A Swedish city with a population of about 90,000 and an area of about 35 square kilometers - like our Uman - provides all energy needs from renewable energy sources, a large share of which is biomass and biogas.
Already in the 60s of the last century, the city authorities realized that the lakes where the city is located need to be cleaned of textile pollution. Today, the once-muddy lake of the Truman region is home to swimming, fishing, and even drinking water.
In the early 90s, even before global warming became a popular topic, the city government developed a program according to which by 2030 there will be no need for refined petroleum products in Vaxjo and will halve its carbon dioxide emissions. As part of the program, farms switched to organic production, and townspeople reduced their paper consumption and switched to ecological modes of transport - bicycles and public transport.
In 1970, the city's main electricity supplier partially phased out petroleum products in favor of forestry-derived moss, cones and twigs, which are now the city's main source of energy. Thanks to special filters, the emissions of harmful substances are very low - about 5% of the permissible norm. |
