With the finals almost completed it is time to sign up for another go.

Although I think the concept works reasonably well, the final seems a bit contrived so I have come up with a different format for this one, assuming we get 16 entrants.

There will be four groups of four matches and each player will play with a different partner (against different opponents) once in each group. The winners of each game (scored in the same way as last time) will progress to the last 8 in that group - you could progress in 0-4 of the groups. Within each of the groups the 8 survivors will be redrawn into two team matches and the 4 winners of this round will then go into a group final.

So far so good - we now have 4 pairs of finalists. If one or more players survive to be in 3 (or 4) of these winning pairs they will be crowned champion(s). If not there will be two more games (some players could be in both).

From these games we then have 2 pairs going forward. If one or more players are represented twice they will then be crowned champion(s), otherwise there will be a one off final amongst the 4 to decide the joint champions.

(Note - each round the pairings will be redrawn - to avoid past pairings if possible)

If that doesn't make sense, all you need to know is that initially you will be in 4 games, each time with a partner, and the more games you win the more chance you have of being champion!

So sign up now!

Format:

Gaditus, I think this format is a bit complex and creates wierd matchups.

Why not do it this way?

Pair everyone up into teams of two -- use whatever handicapping system you want so that you match high and low ranks (EX: If there are 32 entrants, Team A is #1 & #32, B is #2 and #31, etc).

Set the teams up to play in three games each. If you can do this world cup style with fixed divisions of 4 teams a piece, that's ideal.

Then the top 8 teams advance to a brack-style playoff.

That builds more of a "TEAM" feeling.

The main problem with the first iteration of this is that there's no team sense, just random player match-ups.

anyway, think about it.

I also recommend that the winning teams be based on combined scores for both players.

If rseulow's suggestion is followed in a future event, I would be interested! I like the idea of a true team event.

The reason I had set it out as I had was to get away from fixed partnerships. I didn't want some poor soul to be stuck with me all the way through! Also if fixed partnerships are used, the number of 'entrants' is divided by 2 giving a lower number of entries.

The reason for lowest score counting is that it means you have to concentrate on what your partner is doing - with total scores the partnership element could become almost irrelevant. Highest lowest is a common Knizia (the game designer) way of operating.

I don't really mind how the tournament is organised, or scored in practice - I can do it anyway. I would be interested to hear other's views.

Who indeed would want to be stuck with someone who's only won 105 out of 245 games of Amun Re!

Flippin' dead beat, you are!

Seriously - I found the arry of partnerships confusing, and lived in dread of sending a miss-addressed message to an opponent.

If you want to set up a World Cup style team tourney, I'll join that, but I'll sit out this model as a bit too much work for the nonce.

Rseulow makes a good point. I will sit out this game as well (for much the same reasons he cites), but would be very interested in a tournament he describes....
